Almost everyone has jumped on the popular social media sites like Facebook and Twitter. But LinkedIn is sometimes perceived as a third wheel. The benefit of LinkedIn is that it’s specifically tailored for networking professionals, so much so that it’s been nicknamed “the Facebook for professionals”. But is simply filling out the profile fields going to get you the connection and networking that you’re looking for? Maybe. But there are additional ways to amp up your LinkedIn profile.

Check out these 3 steps to create a successfull LinkedIn Profile:

Your Summary is your elevator pitch. What points would you try to convey to your dream client if you only had 30 seconds to talk? A successful elevator pitch should make the receiver want to know more, and it’s no different with your summary. Be memorable, descriptive, and make the reader want to know more.

Write your profile in first person. Third person writing is for movie stars and athletes. Write about you and/or your company’s accomplishments, in addition to your experience and background. Write about what you can do for your customers.

Be brief. While it’s important to be descriptive, you’re not writing a brochure. Be concise and conversational. Your trying to spark a connection, not give a presentation. Write like a real person instead of a corporate microphone.

Consult these steps when creating or revamping your LinkedIn profile. They’re sure to help you make real world connections.

Do you have a LinkedIn profile? We’d love to connect with you! Leave your LinkedIn URL in the comment section below.

While some may argue that it’s only common courtesy to follow all those who follow you on Twitter, there’s more to consider than simply being nice. The choice of deciding what followers you should follow back is one that haunts veteran Tweeters and newbies alike. We’ve broken down the pros and cons to both arguments so that you can decide which following style fits you.

Those who think you should follow all people who follow you have adopted the view that it’s proper etiquette and that it allows for the quickest way to increase your own Follower numbers. But, the more Followers you have, the easier it is to lose track of conversations since your Twitter feed is clogged with dozens and dozens of tweets that might not necessarily pertain to you. This method can also open you to more security threats from spam accounts.

Those who prefer to moderate and review those that they follow do so with the intention of keeping conversation and interaction more focused. They only follow profiles that really interest them. While this method gives an increased level of security and a less cluttered feed, it also limits networking opportunities.

Both have valid view points, right? We say – have a balanced approach. Look for opportunities to meet others that can help you to grow personally and professionally. Having good tools will also help to maximize your Tweeting efforts. Check out our article about the top free apps for managing your social media accounts and see which ones work for you. And lastly, have fun! Twitter is a more casual platform and really promotes one on one conversation.

What’s your Twitter strategy for following others? We’d love to hear!

So, you’re ready to start your blog and write meaningful content for your readers. But how do you do it? You have to find your voice! This is what will differentiate you from your competitors, give off personal flavor, and make your work recognizable.

While there’s a lot involved in getting your blog started and making it successful (check out our articles on SEO Strategies for Blogs and Top Blogging Mistakes to Avoid), here are some tips to help you on your way to finding your writing voice.

Stop talking at your readers. Start talking to your readers. While fancy words and industry jargon may work in some instances, it might also scare the majority of your readers away. Get comfortable and talk like your sitting next to them with a cup of coffee.

Know your writing purpose. Even if you write in a like-able and conversational tone, it won’t get you anywhere without some direction. You have to know your purpose before you start writing. What information do you want to tell your audience? What action do you want to evoke? Think about these things before you put the pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard).

Brand yourself. Whether you prefer to keep a very casual and humorous approach to writing, or prefer a more business like and calculated tone – stick with it and infuse it in all your writing! Do you like using certain words? Do you use a particular greeting? Make sure you inject your quirks or writing style into all content so that your “voice” can really shine through.

Obviously, you won’t know your “voice” right off the bat. It will take some time to perfect and get it right. But once you hit your groove, you’ll find your own uniqueness and use it towards your advantage.

Happy Writing!

Some bloggers say that the average lifespan of a blog post is 30-60 days. Most of the time, when your blog post is off of the front page, the old adage “Out of site, out of mind” holds true. But you spent lots of time creating the perfect content for your audience. Is that really the end? Of course not! It now becomes your job to find ways to recycle that content. Well, we’ve made that job a little easier.

Check out these 3 ways to re-purpose your old (but good!) content:

Turn old posts into e-newsletter content – An e-newsletter is a great way to stay in the minds of your clients (click here for our article on “How to Make a Great Company E-Newsletter). Of course, you’ll need some new content in there as well, but you can: a.) provide links in your newsletter to oldies-but-goodies from your blog or b.) copy and paste old content directly into your newsletter, tweaking necessary areas to make it flow and fit.

Create an e-book – Compile several to a dozen old posts and put them together in an e-book or report. Not only will clients appreciate that you took the time to make your content more easily accessible, but you can even make money off it. While you may certainly give it away for free (after all, having it read is what you want), you can also list it on a site like Amazon or create your own website just for the e-book. People who don’t know your blog, might decide to purchase the compilation for a nominal price. It’s worth a shot, right?

Publish old content as web articles – Tweak old content and publish it to a free submission site like EzineArticles. You can also choose to pay and have them distributed on a larger scale with article distribution sites. This is a great way to use old content, and get those readers to visit your current blog.

If you’re new to the Twitter world, you may be wondering what the purpose of the frequently used hashtag (#) is. The sad truth, is that this helpful tool is often misused. In an effort to help you understand what the purpose of the hashtag is, we’ve compiled a nifty guide for you to consult.

Hashtags Are Used Properly When:

Keeping Track of Converstaions – Hashtags are often used to organize conversations. Fast food giant, McDonalds, created the hashtag #McDStories hoping that it would inspire heart warming stories about Happy Meals. Unfortunately, it took a wrong turn. Either way, the hashtag worked to organize the conversation!

Running Contests – Some companies makeup hashtags to keep track of contest participants. By searching the said hashtag, companies can monitor contest results.

Hashtags Aren’t Use Properly When:

#They’re #Overused – There’s no point is hashtagging every word in your tweet. It doesn’t look professional for business pages and doesn’t serve the purpose of a hashtag.

#They’reusedforonelonghashtagthatnobodywilleversearch – As we mentioned earlier, the purpose of hashtags are to categorize tweets. Will anyone really every need to search a tweet this long? Probably not. While some people use a long hashtag for humor, it’s not really good for anything else.

There are definitely other areas to explore with hashtags, but these few tips cover the basics. Do you know of any other way that people are using hashtags on Twitter? Let us know in a comment below.
