What makes a good logo design?

What is a Logo?

Logos are the centerpiece of a company’s brand image by use of a mark, symbol or signature. It’s the simplest form of identification for the company, which makes it imperative to convey the right message. Since people are exposed to millions of concepts and ideas daily, you only have a few seconds to connect with your viewer. Your logo should individualize you from your competitors, portray your corporate personality, and provide the customer with an idea of what your company does.

Here’s a few key elements you find in many Fortune 500 company logo designs, if you follow the tips below, you’ll be on your way to creating a strong and professional logo design:

Simple
A simple logo design provides easy recognition, allowing the logo to be versatile & memorable. Good logos feature something unexpected or unique without overdoing it with design or color.

Memorable
Following closely behind the principle of simplicity, is that of memorability. This is achieved by having a simple and appropriate logo design.

Timeless
An effective logo should be timeless – will the logo still be effective in 10, 20, 50 years?

Versatile
An effective logo should be able to work across a variety of mediums and applications, from business cards and faxes, to embroidered shirts and billboards. For this reason a logo should be designed in vector format and work in just one color too.

Appropriate
A logo design should be appropriate for the business it represents. If you are designing a logo for a children’s toy store, it would be appropriate to use a childlike font & color scheme. This would not be so appropriate for a law firm.
